Icebreaker

As an icebreaker, we followed the Liberating Structures Mad Tea activity to engage trainees early in the workshop and to create a space for sharing. This activity lasted 5 minutes. In order to use this activity as an icebreaker, follow these steps:

1. Identify open-ended prompts in advance. We placed the open-ended question on separate slides with the instructions (see image to the right). We used the following two questions:
   • What made you smile this week?
   • What does self-care look like for you?
2. After welcoming participants, ask them to take 1 minute to type their answer to the following question without hitting enter. After 1 minute, everyone hits “enter” at the same time and all attendees’ answers are populated in the chat box, giving an opportunity for the facilitators to comment and the trainees to chat with each other.

Follow the same steps for each of the prompts.

Introduction of the Workshop

This section of the workshop introduces trainees to the set of competencies that were used in developing this workshop.

Why care about D&I Science?

This 15-minute section introduces the concepts of diffusion, dissemination and implementation using examples across the translational spectrum.

Diffusion of Innovation Theory and Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research

In this 35-minute section, the Diffusion of Innovation theory is introduced with various examples of diffusion of innovations. Afterwards, the CFIR framework was introduced with the five specific domains and constructs from each domain: 1) Intervention Characteristics, 2) Inner Setting, 3) Outer Setting, 4) Individual Characteristics, and 5) Processes.

CFIR Framework Group Activity

This 20 minute group activity uses a case study, ideally one that is current and relevant to the trainees. Breakout groups with roughly 5-7 participants and a facilitator were created. The groups were provided a file describing the case study (see Appendix), and each was assigned one of the five CFIR domains to frame the discussion. Facilitators shared slides that included discussion questions. Facilitators asked for a trainee volunteer prior to the discussion to report out in the large group.

Report Out

During this 30 minute session, each group reported out its discussion using the lens of the assigned CFIR domain. The following questions were used for the small group report out:

1. What surprised you about how the domain you discussed might impact implementation?​
2. What was one important barrier/challenge you discussed?​
